WMO Executive Council endorses WMO's participation in the Fifth International Polar Year

The WMO's Executive Council endorsed the WMO's participation in the Fifth International Polar Year 2032-33 at their latest meeting. 

The Executive Council's resolution requested that the Panel of Experts on Polar and High Mountain Observations, Research and Services (PHORS) coordinate the contribution of WMO to IPY-5 in collaboration with the engaged international organisations, and promote scientific cooperation, exchange and partnerships, and with the contribution of WMO structures.

The planning for the 5th International Polar Year in 2032-33 is currently underway. Planning discussions have been underway between 17 organisations since 2021 and an initial IPY concept note and planning timeline was published in October 2023.
